As the year closes, we are delighted to announce that the Trust Project is accelerating its global momentum with new European sites.
Three sites in Spain and one in Belgium have now earned the Trust Mark by committing to Trust Project principles and disclosures and showing the 8 Trust Indicators on their pages (see press release).
Our new sites
- 20 Minutos, the third major newspaper of Spain’s top five to join;
- El Heraldo de Aragón, the first Spanish regional;
- and La Información, the first Spanish business news site;
- La Libre Belgique, our first Belgian and first French-language news outlet.
“These sites recognize the critical importance of the Trust Indicators to public awareness and confidence, especially during the latest surge of the pandemic,” said Sally Lehrman, founder and CEO of The Trust Project. “People need to know their news is accurate and impartial when everyday decisions can save lives and the economic stakes are equally high.”
Why it matters
Grounded in research and the real world, these Trust Project transparency disclosures help people easily distinguish journalism with integrity from rumor and deception. They show that Trust Project News Partners adhere to accuracy, ethics and inclusion – and put the public interest first.
Our new European sites underwent an extensive process of implementation – evaluating and updating policies, creating new procedures, and adding transparency to existing standards. The Trust Indicators, a globally accepted transparency standard developed by The Trust Project in collaboration with the public and leaders in news organizations worldwide, help news media hold themselves accountable and ensure reliable news sources dedicated to serving the public interest. As the Trust Project grows, we have translated and interpreted the Trust Indicators for new regions.
Please share the Trust Indicators
For those interested in helping to spread the word about how to assess a site using the 8 Trust Indicators, we offer several videos and eight stills from the Trusted Journalism Campaign. Please feel free to use them!
A big thank you to our funders, whom we deeply appreciate for their commitment to our work: Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the Democracy Fund, Facebook, Google and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
